The Art Peace Experiment

Week 14: Artist Check-In | Backgrounds, Inkwells & Zero Pressure

Briana and Tasha Season 1 Episode 15

This week was all about trying new things in gentle ways. One of us stretched into bigger watercolor washes; the other downsized into tiny oval paintings sized for a vintage inkwell—proof that creativity grows at any scale. We daydream seasonal swaps, share how studies of favorite artists remove the stakes, and sketch summer plans that include our kids. There’s also a love letter to embroidery as soothing, tactile art. Verdict: Week 14 felt good—playful, doable, and momentum-building.

Thank you so much for listening.

SPEAKER_00:

Welcome to the Art Peace Experiment. We're your hosts, two artists and friends. I'm Tasha. And I'm Brianna. At the end of 2024, we decided we wanted to cultivate more safety, peace, love, alignment, and excitement through our art and our art practices. So here we are sharing our journey with you. And we're so excited you're here. We hope you enjoy our conversations. They're honest, raw, just just two friends talking to each other about the realities of life and creativity. We're so excited for you to join us and be along with us for the journey. Week 14. We are into our first week of our second quarter. How'd it go? We did great. Did we though? Did we create this week? What happened? Well, that's true. Yeah, I did create. Did you create? I did. I did a painting. Nice. So did I. I did two little mini paintings. Oh, fun. So I found this antique inkwell at an antique shop with my mom and it's amazing. It's so pretty. And so there's a removable picture you take out of it. And I was like, well, I have to paint a painting. Clearly, it was meant to be. It was meant to be. Yes, my soul claimed it. I was like, this is coming home with me and I'm painting, painting. So I, yeah, I cut up some paper and I had like three, three, the paper cut just right so that I had three little mini pages, you know, for oh like it fit it fit three yeah I don't even know how to say that the paper was big enough to fit three ovals ovals yeah to the frame okay gotcha anyways and so yeah I was like I'm just gonna play with it I'm gonna see just gonna see what comes out of my brain and what comes out onto the page and see what I like best so yeah I made two and I'm working on the third one that's so fun yeah I can't wait to see I mean I've seen the first two I can't wait to see the third one you come up with I still think you should do all the different seasons yeah I know that's a good idea that would be really fun to do yeah something for each season and just like swap it out yeah that's a good idea maybe I will I'm having a lot of fun with it so I might just keep going you know cut up more pieces of paper yeah of my pastel board and yeah I love it go for it I love it so much yeah I've been creating so many springtime things and like it's springtime right now while we're recording this it is springtime but then I made something really moody and more fall themed this week which was kind of fun that's fun tell me more yeah well I actually uh so I haven't painted like the background of the illustrations that I've been doing I've just been focusing on like the spot illustrations just the center thing and that's it's been really fun I've really been enjoying it but then I had to like okay time to get brave and to try the scary thing of making the watercolor listen to me for a much larger surface area and it was scary but I did it yay way to go thank you thank you I don't have any like deep emotional things that I really overcame this week though like yeah I don't know nothing really to share that way I just I did the scary background painting nice no that's good trying something new that you haven't really done before, that's fun. Yeah. That's fun. I think that we both kind of did that. You know, I tried something new with the inkwell sizes. That was a very different size and shape because it's a little oval shape that I haven't painted before. And yeah, so. I love that you just leaned into what excited you though. And it almost freed up space to get creative and to have fun, which I love. Yeah, there was like no, Thank you so much. yeah I'm excited to keep going because I like the ones that I've done but I'm yeah it's kind of like well let's see if I keep going then I'll be like oh this is the one you know you have so many cool like vintage frames it might be fun to like do more paintings like here's a frame and what would look fun in here yeah I've been thinking it would be fun to do some studies of like impressionist artists too just to kind of you know practice and play with it and like play with the color and and yeah anyway so I might try that too I might start I might join you that sounds really fun I know it is and then it's also less pressure like low pressure you know I'm not starting from scratch I just am playing and practicing and yeah that's all it has to be you know and that's really fun too going into summer because we're gonna have our kids home and That's something they could easily join in on. Yeah, totally. It's a good summer activity. Yeah. And then we can teach them a little art history because they would definitely love that and not be bored at all. Right. Yeah. Small bets. Maybe they could take it. I want to learn. Please try it. I want to learn about the art history because I think it's interesting. I love it. I love it. Yeah. Okay. We'll talk about it. Okay. Well, yeah. Total art history nerds over here. I took art history in college and it was one of my favorite classes. Me too. I loved it. Me too. Everyone was like, ooh, art history is so horrible. It's so bad. It's so boring. I took it and I was like, I love this. This is so fun. It's the best. It's so interesting. And I only took one. I only took the first one. I didn't even get into the renaissance of really cool stuff. I took probably what even more people considered the even more boring art history class. Oh man. But I loved it. Yeah. So we have an art museum near us and maybe that's how we'll start our art history lessons with our children is we go to the art museum and then point out, you know, that could be fun if we could go like going to the art museum, taking a picture that's actually there that we see in person and then say, okay, let's try and recreate this. That might get them more engaged. Yeah. I love that idea. Because they actually saw it in person. you know like anyways we also have an embroidery exhibit right now that I'm dying to go see I know it's amazing I've seen it and I yeah we have to go we do we have to go okay new summer plans I love this this is great and yeah I mean it's worth a look into that like embroidery painting because it's amazing if you've never looked into it before or seen anything about that it is so cool so just a little tidbit recommendation 10 out of 10 loved it yeah if you're wanting textile art something that's fun and beautiful and um good for mental health yeah I love embroidery it's it's cool so yeah we'll we'll keep you updated on if we actually do do that for our summer plans yeah more check-ins to come yeah but week 14 it went pretty good yay We'll see you next time. That's it for today, friend. Thanks for spending this time with us. We hope you're leaving with a little more light, a little more peace, and maybe even a nudge to go be creative just because it brings a little more joy to your life.
